John's Spotlight: Celebrating Service this Holiday Season

Happy Holidays!

Every month, I highlight the accomplishments of a local resident or organization on the John’s Spotlight section of my website. Recently, I have spotlighted the East Middlesex ARC (EMARC) in Reading, My Brother’s Table in Lynn, and The Open Door in Gloucester—three unique organizations making a difference in our communities.

Today, I want to bring to your attention the important work being done by three communities to help those in need this holiday season. From delivering toys to children to providing meals, these generous men and women exemplify the holiday spirit.

Wakefield Food for Friends Drive

The community of Wakefield truly came together this year to support the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry, an organization founded to make sure that no one would go hungry in our community. This volunteer-run organization provides food for struggling families and individuals in Wakefield.

This year, the Referral Connection, a Wakefield chapter of Business Network International (BNI), is partnering with the Wakefield Interfaith Food Pantry in the “Food for Friends Drive,” supplementing the Pantry’s efforts during the holiday season. Through “Food for Friends,” the Referral Connection, a networking group for small businesses and individuals, is committing to at least $500 in food donations by chapter members plus a $100 cash contribution.

Kelly DeFelice, president of the Wakefield Chapter, was quoted recently in the Daily Times Chronicle saying, “The people who run the food pantry do great work and provide an important service to the community. We are a group of small businesses in and around Wakefield, and we’d like to pitch in. The holiday season seems like an appropriate time to start.”

Salisbury Santa’s Helpers

Salisbury Santa’s Helpers
is an organization with which I have volunteered several times. Under the leadership of founder, Betty Cloonan, the organization, which is in its 37th year of operation, assists an average of 400 children annually.

Ms. Cloonan started Santa’s Helpers after realizing the extent of unfulfilled needs in the community. Involving school officials, non-profits, small businesses, parents, and volunteers, this annual tradition provides children from across the community with gifts to unwrap during the holidays.

As Ms. Cloonan said in the Newburyport Daily News last month, "It's the look on the children's faces when they get to school and talk about the things they got for Christmas that's so great," Cloonan said. "They have toys and clothes, just like everyone else."

Swampscott Turkey Drive

Once again, Swampscott pulled together this Thanksgiving to collect and donate 71 turkeys and numerous bags of boxed and canned grocery items to My Brother's Table and The Lynn Hunger Network.

Led by the Kennedy family, the Swampscott community is committed to making every effort to ensure that local families do not go without food during the holiday season. For the past six years, the Kennedy family has hosted this Turkey Drive, with support from the Swampscott Police and Fire Departments, and known and anonymous members of the community.

I hope that you will share with me similar experiences that you have had with local organizations as well as stories about your friends and neighbors who are helping our communities.  Moving forward, please use the form located here on my website to recommend your friends, neighbors and local organizations that deserve to be acknowledged!
